The Slope House is a guest house for city dwellers located on Omishima Island in the Ehime region of Japan. In the house, three distinct experiential zones allow the visitor to slow down and appreciate the beautiful scenery of the island. The living room of the house opens out to the sea with a view of the sunset over the bay in the evening. The bedroom faces into the lush greenery of Omishima and is oriented to welcome morning light through the leaves. On the bathing level of the house the visitor showers with the sights, sounds, and smells of tropical
vegetation, and can then bathe with a view of the sunset; an intimate compressed version of the experiential journey through the house. The house is approached by a winding path around the eastern side of the small peninsula. As you near the end of the small peninsula, Ito’s own house appears. Turning to the left, you see another small path in the trees, leading to the guest house. When there is no guest, the guest house hardly exists on the island, it is visible only from boat or from across the bay.
